The Rock My Wedding Guide To Picking Your Wedding Make-Up Artist

At Rock My Wedding we have an abundance of make up artists on our handpicked supplier directory, The List. But where to start? Don’t they all look wonderful? So, to celebrate our brand new Limited Edition Birchbox, we’ve put together our comprehensive guide to how to pick your wedding make-up artist.

Practice Makes Perfect

Generally most make-up artists will charge for a trial and in our opinion, it’s totally worth it. You tried on your dress before your wedding day, right? And we all know that the best bit about planning was doing the food and wine tasting, correct? Think of your make-up artist in the same way. This person is going to be party to an intimate point of the day; when your bridesmaids open the gifts you’ve painstakingly chosen or when your mum sees you for the first time, and you want them to fit in perfectly. Meeting the make-up artist means you can get to know them, as well as discussing your plans for your make-up, so there are no surprises on the day.

Knowledge Is Power

Try to give your make-up artist as much information before meeting them so they can think about what will work for you. If you’ve had problem skin in the past, make sure they know this, as well as your normal routine or if there are any products you don’t like. This saves everyone time and ensures that you’re choosing someone who understands your skin. Prepping before the wedding can be just as important as the make-up itself and a make-up artist can always recommend ideas for this. In our Birchbox we’ve got the award winning Spacemasks and Oh K! Gold Eye Foil Masks, which are perfect for creating that gorgeous bridal glow.

Get Creative

Any make-up artist should be able to also advise you on what type of make-up you could go for, and you can work together to create your perfect look. If you’ve seen any real brides on Rock My Wedding or our Pinterest page that you really love, pop those in an email so your MUA can see your vision. Equally, your dress can also help as a basis, as Grace from Lips and Locks explains: “It is always a good idea to show your artist the dress you have gone for so you can work together to create your final look. Your artist will be able to advise you on different styles that will suit different neck lines or perhaps a bold lip to change up your look for the evening”. In our Birchbox, we chose a gorgeous Bobbi Brown neutral lip that can change your look up in a simple way.

Finally, at Rock My Wedding our ethos is Your Day Your Way and this applies to your make-up, too. Remember: a make-up artist should make you feel like the best version of yourself.
