#AskAsh: How Do I Stop My Mascara Smudging?

Q. Ash, which products are best for redness? - @katie.l.cattell

A. Redness can be caused by a multitude of things including rosacea, skin sensitivity, sunburn or even spicy food! As someone who suffers with redness, I try to use products that are made for sensitive skin, like REN’s Evercalm range which steers clear of irritating ingredients. I also swear by anything made with centella asiatica, an incredibly soothing Chinese herb that helps to restore your skin’s barrier (the outer layer that essentially acts as a security guard, defending you from the baddies and keeping everything on the inside safe). If you’re looking to conceal, try a green colour corrector (like this one from Laura Geller) as green is a complementary colour to red and will counteract any flushes.

Q. Ash, how do I stop mascara smudging under my eyes? - @janey_hall

A. Whether it’s a case of oily skin or a sub-par formula, this happens to everyone - but even knowing that, it doesn’t make you feel much better! Most of the time, I manage to combat it by popping a heavy duty powder underneath my eyes and using a water-resistant or waterproof mascara on my bottom lashes, like Benefit’s BADgal BANG. Sadly, your mascara can still go rogue - sweat and humidity are common factors - so sometimes I go bare on my bottom lashes. (If you’re someone who can’t live without it, why not try a tint?)

Q. Ash, which is better for applying foundation, a beauty sponge or a brush? - @babygirltour

A. It’s personal preference and there’s no right or wrong answer. Honestly, trial and error is a good way to determine what works for you and which finish you prefer. Personally, I like to use a damp beautyblender for my base as I feel it gently pushes the product into my skin, rather than leaving it on the surface. This gives sheer, lightweight, natural coverage. The only downside to using a sponge is that, well, it’s a sponge, and can absorb a lot of product. On the other hand, whether you use a flat foundation brush or a dense kabuki brush, it becomes easier to layer on your foundation and control your coverage, which is perfect for those who prefer a fuller coverage.
