#AskAsh: How Can I Make My Hair Less Greasy?

Q. Ash, how can I make my hair look less greasy between washes?

A.

It might surprise you to hear that the root of greasy hair is overwashing. This strips your strands of natural oils and causes your scalp to go into overdrive and produce way too much oil to compensate. It’s a cycle, and a vicious one at that, but you can rectify it.

The trick is to slowly start extending the time between washes. If you wash every day, start leaving a day in between. Every other day? Stretch to three… And so on, and so forth (within reason). Each hair type has different wants and needs, but these four tips should help you with the basics.

type=wave1. Go Sulphate Free
Sulphates are what gives you a satisfying lather and squeaky clean feeling. But they’re also harsh on your hair, leaving your strands dry and desperate for oil (you can see where this is going!). Try to opt for gentle, sulphate-free formulas like Cake’s The Posh Wash Swirl Shampoo. It still removes dirt, grime and pollution, but also leaves your hair strong, nourished and healthy.

type=wave2. Dry Shampoo Is Your Friend
Not all dry shampoos are created equally (horrible white streaks, am I right?). But one of my favourites will always be Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo. It’s powered by patented molecules and technology that actually leave your hair feeling and smelling clean, not just looking fresh. It’s great to spritz in the AM, throughout the day or even before bed as a preventative treatment.

type=wave3. Try A Clarifying Shampoo
Essentially a souped-up shampoo, clarifying formulas remove product build up, unclog pores and balance your scalp to create the best foundation for thicker, fuller hair. There are hundreds of options out there for different price points, from Aveda’s Invanti Advanced Exfoliating Shampoo to Brave.New.Hair’s Balance And Purifying Detox Shampoo - both are fantastic and leave your hair feeling light and clean.

type=wave4. Moisture Isn’t Scary
Those overproduced natural oils don’t always make their way down to the tips of your tresses, so you still need to use a conditioner that’s right for your hair type. And if you’re finding your hair is lacking moisture as you’re not washing as often, then give amika’s SILKEN UP dry conditioner a try. It works exactly the same as a dry shampoo but instead of removing oil, it softens, smooths and detangles.
