A Beginner’s Guide to Double Cleansing

But, with our skin exposed to higher levels of pollution and more unwanted grime than ever before, the risk of breakouts, ageing, and pigmentation is real. The solution? Double cleansing. If you wear make-up daily then this new approach to skincare guarantees that you’ll have truly clean skin at the end of the day. And, even if you don’t rock a full foundation, cleansing twice prevents the build-up of dirt and toxins on your skin and helps your other products to penetrate more effectively into the skin. Your skin will be left healthier, brighter, and all-round happier.

So, how’s it done? For this, you’ll need two different formulas – something oily for your first cleanse and something water-based for your second.

Step One

The aim of cleanse one is to break down your make-up and to rid your skin of excess oils that might have built up during the day. Cleansing oils, rich balms, and micellar waters are great for this because they can be applied to damp skin and removed using just a cotton pad or a damp cloth. This way they’ll gently remove anything sitting on the surface of your complexion without leaving your skin feeling stripped. Once you’ve finished this step, your skin should look clean but shouldn’t feel tight.

Step Two

Now that all make-up and grime has been swept away, it’s time for a deep clean using a good old water-based cleanse. While we don’t advocate reaching for a bar of the white stuff, this second cleanse is when you should opt for a formula that will slough away any remaining impurities while catering to your specific complexion concerns. Cleansing milks, gels, and clay-based formulas are all great options. For best results, spend at least a minute massaging your chosen cleanser into your skin before rinsing clean with lukewarm water.
